Welcome Dr. Thompson
With over 30 years of experience in oncology and hematology, Dr. Thompson is already making a difference with his compassionate, patient-first approach.
Ivinson Memorial Hospital proudly welcomes Dr. Keith Thompson, our newest oncologist. Dr. Thompson brings a wealth of experience to the Meredith and Jeannie Ray Cancer Center.
“I am excited to improve upon the excellent care patients already receive here at Ivinson” Dr. Thompson said. He has “already made a huge impact on the paitents and staff in the cancer center” said Amy Smith, the Director of The Meredith & Jeanie Ray Cancer Center. Dr. Thompson has quickly become a keystone member of the Ivinson team.
Dr. Thompson started his education at the University of Auburn earning his Bachelor of Science in Chemistry. He graduated summa cum laude in 1981. He then went to Vanderbilt University and received his doctor of medicine in 1985. Then he spent his internship, residency and fellowship at the Medical University of South Carolina.
Dr. Thompson initially got into medicine like many people who go into medicine, to make his parents proud. After his education he worked for the Montgomery Cancer Center for 31 years. Dr. Thompson entered the medical field driven by his parents’ pride, over the course of his career his patients became his drive. People are Dr. Thompson’s passion. He came to Ivinson for the people. He continued pursuing medicine as a calling for people. Whether you are a patient or staff, when you are talking with him he puts an emphasis on you and understanding you. Caring for people as individuals, not only as patients is a philosophy that Dr. Thompson embodies.
Dr. Thompson grew up around agriculture. His dad worked in land management and had 200 head of cattle on a 150-acre plot, often unheard of here in Wyoming. He and his siblings would do 4H projects and grew up deep in the world of agriculture. Wyoming is a heavily driven by agriculture, especially ranching. The people of Wyoming have developed a unique way of thinking and philosophies, especially around work, that is based in agricultural roots. Dr. Thompson may not be a born Wyomingite but he has the blood of a cowboy. He already is great at communicating with his patients but he can also relate to the Wyoming tough mentality and understand the cowboy way of dedication to work, grit and determination. Equipped with that understanding, he is able to provide care accordingly to work with the life of the patient.
Dr. Thompson initially heard about Ivinson from a friend during a visit to Denver. Learning of a fantastic experience with the staff and that Ivinson was also in need of a new oncologist, Dr. Thompson decided to come to Laramie and see Ivinson for himself. Impressed by the staff at the cancer center and the quality of care they provide, he decided to fill the vacant oncologist position
“We are so fortunate to have someone with extensive training in oncology AND hematology in our community,” said Amy Smith “He has really integrated himself into our community and already made a huge impact on the staff in the cancer center. He is a very kind soul who obviously loves helping people.”
Dr. Thompson is a fantastic addition to Ivinson. He is an experienced physician and understands the Wyoming mentality. Dr. Thompson takes the time to get to know his staff and patients alike. Ivinson is grateful to have him as a part of our hospital family!
