Basic Life Support
overview
The American Heart Association’s BLS course trains participants to promptly recognize several life-threatening emergencies, give high-quality chest compressions, deliver appropriate ventilations and provide early use of an AED. Reflects science and education from the American Heart Association Guidelines Update for CPR and Emergency Cardiovascular Care (ECC).
In this course you will learn:
- High-quality CPR for adults, children, and infants
- The AHA Chain of Survival, specifically the BLS components
- Important early use of an AED
- Effective ventilations using a barrier device
- Importance of teams in multi-rescuer resuscitation/CPR and performance as an effective team member
- Relief of foreign-body airway obstruction (choking) for adults and infants
Target Audience
Healthcare professionals and other personnel who need to know how to perform CPR and other basic cardiovascular life support skills in a wide variety of in-facility and prehospital settings. Parents of infants and young children can also benefit from this class through the Stork Support program.
BLS Initial Prerequisites
All participants must be able to successful demonstrate the actual physical skills which may include performing compressions and backslaps, kneeling, and squeezing the bag valve mask.
BLS Renewal Prerequisites
- All participants must have a current unencumbered AHA ACLS certificate.

A manual is included for non-IMH employees. Parents utilizing this class through Stork Support will have the course fee waived.
